Underwater Portraits shot in 1982 – Moray Wheels training in swimming pool

In 1982 I was the underwater photographer for the first Moray Wheels Adaptive Scuba expedition to the Florida Keys. Part of the project was gathering a set of underwater portraits that could be used in future publicity for the emerging Adaptive Scuba movement. Shot on a Nikonos with  28mm lens.

The original  image was shot on Kodachrome 64 and has a distinctly blue cast, but this scanned version has had the white balance adjusted in Adobe Lightroom. After slight adjustments to the exposure to remove burnt out highlights and some removal of dust spots from the scan, I increased the mid tone contrast using the Clarity function in Lightroom 3, and added a boost to the overall colour vibrance.

By scanning the original slides and adding some post processing work, even underwater portraits from 30 years ago can be given a new lease of life.

See my main underwater photography page for more hints and tips on underwater portraits and other types of underwater images.
